Description
Striking foliage plant with glossy green leaves with maroon undersides atop maroon stems. Gorgeous salmon/red flowers that are large compared to other gingers. A very attractive ornamental plant. Flowers appear from July to October depending on temperatures and our summer.
William Wright Smith originally described Hedychium greenii in 1913, naming it after H.F. Green whose collectors had, approximately 2 years earlier found the species growing wild in the low hills of southwestern Bhutan. Plants originating from this location were cultivated at Green’s home in Darjeeling and later also at the Calcutta Botanic Garden before being sent to England.
